Yom HaKiffuriym – Day of Atonements, from kafar – to atone, cover, wash away, wipe off, forgive.

 

Shemoth [Exodus] 30:10, " 'aharon will make atonement on its horns once a year; he will make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. it is qodesh qadashiym to YHWH.' "

 

Wayiqqra [Leviticus] 23:27-32, " 'on the tenth of this seventh month, this is a yom kippuriym; there will be a set apart gathering, and you will humble your nafeshoth and will bring a fire offering to YHWH.  ²⁸ and you will do no work in this same day, for it is a yom kippuriym, to atone for you before YHWH your elohey.  ²⁹ for any nefesh who is not humbled in this same day will be cut off from his people.  ³⁰ and any nefesh who does any work in this same day, i will even destroy that nefesh from the midst of his people.  ³¹ you will do no work; it is a eternal rule throughout your generations, in all your bathey.  ³² it is a shabbath of rest to you, and you will humble your nafeshoth in the ninth of the month at evening; from evening until evening you will keep your shabbath.' "

 

Wayiqqra 25:9, " 'and you will let a shofar sound, a signal in the seventh month, in the tenth of the month; on the yom kippuriym, let a shofar pass throughout all your land;' "

 

BeMidbar [Numbers] 29:7-11, " 'and on the tenth of this seventh month a set apart assembly you will have, and you will humble your nefeshoth; do no work.  ⁸ and you will bring near a burnt offering to YHWH, a sweet fragrance, one bull, a son of the herd, one ram, seven lambs, sons of a year, perfect ones they are for you.  ⁹ and their present, flour mixed with oil, three-tenth deals for the bull, two-tenth deals for the one ram.  ¹⁰ a several tenth deal for the one lamb, for the seven lambs.  ¹¹ one kid of the goats, a sin offering; apart from the sin offering of the atonements, and the continual burnt offering, and its present, and their drink offerings.' "
